WIP Pirate Kalwa

So this Saturday, August 14th, Toonami is debuting a new show called Fena: Pirate Princess, which is their first original show in collaboration with Crunchyroll. I’ve actually been real excited about the show ever since the previews started up last year, as I seriously can’t think of any other pirate themed anime shows out there other than One Piece. It’s not that I’m a big fan of pirates, but the show sounds so interesting and exciting. So to celebrate here’s a little WIP of Kalwa as a pirate. Essentially it’s the same design as the One Piece design from last year, except with a bit more skin, accessories and some more tears. Should be ready sometime this weekend if I can finish the next page in a timely manner.

Izuha

Taking a slight break from comic pages to do a character draw up. So this is a new character that will soon be debuting in chapter 24, for that matter she can be seen on the cover. This is Izuha, who was a character intially designed to be just a minor character as one of Hideyoshi’s many pupils. However while writing the script, I wound up developing her into a more fleshed out character as a way for Kalwa to learn about the students and the history of where she’s staying. Anyway, watch for her in the coming pages coming up.

Sorry everyone for being so late, just had to fine tune everything. Anyway, we are on for page 4 of chapter 24. At this point I’m kinda just scribbling weapons and was even putting a trident in the background not knowing if it would fit, but someone on facebook pointed out the weapon in the background so I appreciate it. Only three days after it debuted and we got a new page for chapter 24 up and ready for you all. This page is a bit of a call back to chapter 1 in which Kalwa said she wasn’t a fan of onions. Intially it was meant to just be a simple passing note, but this time we play it up. As usual, click the thumbnail below to see the latest page.

It’s been a bit of a long route here everyone, the script was late getting to me and my dog got sick which really weighed me down and I didn’t feel like working. But Chapter 24 is underway and I’m shooting for a weekend launch. As proof, here’s some screen shots showing where things lay at the moment. Look for chapter 24 this weekend!!!

Reizo Sketches

So now comes Reizo, the latest villain to debut in Kalwa, even though he was only seen briefly at the end of the last chapter. Reizo was actually a character who I had been planning for as he was a character from my original version of Kalwa drawn back in high school. However the character here is racially different from the version I had drawn then, most notably the hair. I really wanted Reizo to appear as an overly serious and downright scary person, so I put a lot of emphasis on his eyes, styling them to look slim and snake like. As with other members of his group, he is covered in rags and battle scars which he wears as a symbol of pride. The little backstory about his facial scar which was mentioned at the beginning of chapter 24 was something I came up with on the spot while writing the script as a way to add more character development.

So I got a little caught up working on this tonight, I’m still kinda debating if the orange overtone is working for this piece. So there might be a slight change depending on how I feel tomorrow. We’ll just see, in the meantime here’s the hard time in progress work on chapter 24’s cover.
