Reposting some artwork done in 2021. I feel like this past year I really fell in love with what I was doing and there were a lot of inspiration through streaming and web videos. I also had a lot time to play and experiment with techniques to up the quality. Not to mention bringing my sketchbook to work to practice gestures and more.
So here’s a reflection on some of the art from last year!
A bit of an old drawing of Kalwa with her short hair. This was done WAY back before she officially got it cut during the Whitechapel arch. I think I first drew this during chapter 16 or 17. This was before I started using some of the same techniques you see on some of the more modern illustrations. Truth be told, Kalwa’s short hair is symbolic, it’s supposed to show her at a weak point and that she’s still living with the scars she endured from Victor back in chapter 19. Hence the general theme with this drawing.
Kalwa if she appeared in Stoneworld from Dr. Stone. For those who saw my 1st Studio Tour post, you probably read that Dr. Stone has rocketed it’s way to my favorite anime, just short of Digimon which really only sits at the top due to nostalgia (so objectively Dr. Stone is really number 1). And after seeing a number of costumes from the show (mainly Kohaku) I really wanted to draw Kalwa in one of the outfits. Also this was the first of a series in which Kalwa would appear in various outfits as though she lived in that anime world.
Just a random idea I had a while back if Kalwa dressed as a rather over the top and semi-ridicules kid from the 90s. I think was watching old videos on Retro Junk at the time and just wanted to do something to represent the 90s!
A quick little sketch I drew a little while ago when the original sketch fo the two got pretty popular after I reposted it. I’m actually thinking of going back to doing the Kid Kalwa mini comics again, a few ideas are starting to come to mind.
New Kalwa as the Raptor Queen artwork, just an FYI, this picture features an older Kalwa, so she’s probably about 20 years old. She lives with the raptors, speaks raptor and leads them in their hunts at night. Maybe one day I’ll do this as a mini comic in an alternate universe of Kalwa, maybe after the story is finished as I don’t want to confuse people.
The first published volume of the Kalwa Graphic Novel is upon us soon. So it’s full speed ahead on the the cover. This little break from chapters has given me the time I need to hone my drawing style, and now I’m now experimenting with angles and adding more motion into my work, so hopefully when I come back to doing actual chapters, I can better enhance the artwork. The first volume will be hitting digital in June and hardcopy in July. More updates on progress will be coming along!
Third entry in the Kalwa in Anime series, this entry is if Kalwa lived in the One Piece world, ironically this started off as an illustration with nothing before exploding in a wild storm of posing and action affects. Only two more left in the anime illustration series.
